Aquatics

These classes are a continuation in the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Curriculum. All classes are instructed by a certified Water Safety Instructor. Students will learn advanced skills and strokes such as the sidestroke, breaststroke and butterfly. To enroll in an advanced course, the student must have successfully passed the previous course. Red Cross cards showing that the course was successfully completed should be shown at registration. 

• Level 4:
  • Stroke Improvement (Must have passed level 3)
• Level 5: 
  • Stroke Refinement (Must have passed level 4)
• Level 6
  • Fitness Swimmer (Must have passed level 5
  • Fundamentals of Diving (Must have passed level 5)

This class requires the parent to go in the water with the child. Children under 48 inches tall are eligible. Children will progress at their own rate under a qualified instructor. The minimum age is 6 months. The maximum age is 5 years. 

These classes are for adults interested in learning how to swim. The beginner class will work on fundamental aquatic skills. The intermediate class will work on stroke development. Both classes are instructed by a certified Water Safety Instructor.

Morning Swims run Monday through Friday as long as school is in session.   All lanes are circle swimming only, and there will be slow, medium and fast paced lanes. Kickboards, pull buoys, and noodles will be provided upon request. Space will also be provided for Aqua walking. Come to any Morning Swim to register. Morning Swim and Recreational swim registration cards are interchangeable.

Splashball is an introductory of water polo to students 1^st grade – 4^th Grade. Splashball provides basic skills and understanding of the sport in a recreational format. This program takes place in the shallow end of the GMIS pool, creating a safe environment to learn all the fun and dynamic aspects of water polo. No water polo knowledge necessary.

The Pennsylvania Middle School League featuring the high school stars of tomorrow. The majority of the state's top high school teams offer feeder programs in order to develop the skills of their younger athletes. This great opportunity is available to athletes in the Governor Mifflin School District starting in September and concluding with a championship tournament prior to the end of the high school season on November 1st. 

The Governor Mifflin Middle School Water Polo Program is offered to all GM Students from 5th-8th grade. The program runs practice two days per week with tournaments on Sunday afternoons across eastern & central Pennsylvania.  The MS water polo program is designed to create interest, encourage participation, and develop player skills in the sport of water polo.

Who can join the GM swimming and diving team?

Any student of the Governor Mifflin School District ages 5 - 14 as of December 1, 2018 may join the team for the current season.  Also, anyone whose parent or guardian is an employee of the district may also have their child swim or dive for the team, as long as they do not live in the Muhlenberg, Schuylkill Valley, Reading, Wilson, Manheim Township, or Owen J. Roberts school districts, as these schools have programs in our league. 

Swimmers living in Twin Valley and Wyomissing as well as divers in Exeter are also able to join our GM team. 

Please note: Swimmers should be able to swim at least one lap of both freestyle and another stroke before joining the swimming team.  Divers should be able to do a forward dive off of the diving board prior to joining the team.
