About Our Community Programs

Learn To Swim

Beginner Swim Lessons

The six levels of Learn-to-Swim instruction help swimmers of all ages and varying abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. The American Red Cross Learn to Swim Curriculum is used for these classes, which is designed to teach aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression, while providing students with a positive learning experience.

Level 1 - Intro to Water Skills

Prerequisites for this level is 4 years old or under 48 inches tall. The objectives of Level 1 are to learn basic personal water safety information and skills, to help participants feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. In Level 1, participants learn elementary aquatic skills, which they will build on as they progress through the seven Learn-to-Swim levels. At this level, participants begin developing good attitudes about swimming and water safety, good swimming habits and safe practices in and around the water.

Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Prerequisites for this level 5 years old or 48 inches tall or taller. The objective of Level 2 is to give participants success with fundamental skills. Participants learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Participants continue to explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back to lay the foundation for future strokes.

Level 3: Stroke Development

Participants entering this course must have a level 2 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 2. The objectives of Level 3 are for participants to learn the survival float, the elementary backstroke, and to coordinate the front crawl. They are introduced to the scissors kick and dolphin kick and build on the fundamentals of treading water. Participants also learn rules for headfirst entries and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst from the side of the pool.

Advanced Swim Lessons

These classes are a continuation in the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Curriculum. All classes are instructed by a certified Water Safety Instructor. Students will learn advanced skills and strokes such as the sidestroke, breaststroke and butterfly. To enroll in an advanced course, the student must have successfully passed the previous course. Red Cross cards showing that the course was successfully completed should be shown at registration.

Parent & Tot Learn To Swim

This class requires the parent to go in the water with the child. Children under 48 inches tall are eligible. Children will progress at their own rate under a qualified instructor. The minimum age is 6 months. The maximum age is 5 years.

Adult Learn To Swim

These classes are for adults interested in learning how to swim. The beginner class will work on fundamental aquatic skills. The intermediate class will work on stroke development. Both classes are instructed by a certified Water Safety Instructor.

Recreational Swim, Morning Swim, & Aqua Walking

Morning Swims are for adults only. There will be slow, medium and fast paced lanes. All lanes are circle swimming only. Kick boards and pull buoys will be provided upon request. Space will also be provided for Aqua walking. Come to any Morning Swim to register. Morning Swim and Recreational swim registration cards are interchangeable.

Lifeguard Certification

The purpose of the American Red Cross lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies; and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over.

Participants must be 15 years or older by the end of the course. Students must attend all classes, pass all tests, and competently perform the required skills in order to receive certification at the end of the course. Payment and attendance do not guarantee certification. All classes are mandatory. A $50 non-refundable deposit is required when registering.

Lifeguard Recertification

Splash Ball

Splashball is an introductory of water polo to students 1^st grade – 4^th Grade. Splashball provides basic skills and understanding of the sport in a recreational format. This program takes place in the shallow end of the GMIS pool, creating a safe environment to learn all the fun and dynamic aspects of water polo. No water polo knowledge necessary.

Middle School Spring Water Polo

• We are looking to add spring polo opportunities. We will be working with MS programs throughout Berks County to provide spring water polo opportunities. The spring schedule and potential games will be based off of these answers. Please make sure to take the time to check your schedule and answer all questions. Only answer yes to a game day if you have the day fully available.

• If you have any questions please let me know. If you know anyone interested in trying out spring polo, please share this form with them.

• In the spring, GM Polo participates in the Mainline Water Polo League through American Water Polo (AWP). In order to participate in this league athletes must be registered through American Water Polo. If your athlete is not registered with AWP he/she will not be permitted to play in tournaments. When registering for AWP you will select "Scholastic Athlete Annual Membership 22 and younger." This fee is $55.00 and is not included in your spring training fee paid to GM. After you select "Scholastic Athlete Annual Membership 22 and younger" you will choose our club: Governor Mifflin Water Polo. If you have any issues registering your child with AWP please contact Kyle.Kuser@gmsd.org

No experience necessary but each athlete must be able to SWIM 100 YARDS FREESTYLE and Tread with no hands for a minute. Competition style swimming suit or water polo suit and goggles required. New Athletes can try out the first three practices before fees are due.

AWP New Policies:

Partial Team Roster
Teams that have too few athletes to make a full roster for a game should attend the game and borrow athletes from the opposing team to avoid forfeiting. Notice should be given to the league 24 hours prior. You may call my cell phone: 610-505-8761 if after normal business hours.

Forfeit
Teams failing to show for a contest will be fined $200/game. Since most schedules will include your club playing two games/day, missing a date of competition will cost your club $400. Money collected from the offending team will be distributed to the teams receiving the forfeits. A forfeit on a second date will result in suspension from the league for the remainder of the season, as well as financial penalties.

Schedule Change Request
Teams requesting to be removed from a scheduled game after the final version is released must pay $100/game, assuming a substitute team can be found. If a substitute team cannot be located the Forfeit Policy will apply.

Insurance Liability

Every team must have an active, AWP safety-certified coach in attendance (there is no cost-we pay for any fees and you get a free shirt). In addition, all athletes must be registered members of American Water Polo. We can help crosscheck your athletes for you, or you can check for yourself by going to our website. We will assume that teams failing to submit complete rosters will need to register all of their athletes, and we will include a $55 membership fee per athlete with the league invoices at the end of the season. To avoid this charge, simply make sure your athletes are registered.

We are very hopeful that none of these sanctions will be issued, and that coaches will have an entire season without having to scramble at the last minute due to schedule changes. Our goal is to provide a schedule that everyone can rely on.

If we are unable to field a team due to availability we will look at other spring options.

• To be eligible to play in the spring league all athletes will have to register via AWP water polo

Age Group Swimming and Diving Program

Who can join the GM swimming and diving team?

Any student of the Governor Mifflin School District ages 5 - 14 as of December 1, 2018 may join the team for the current season. Also, anyone whose parent or guardian is an employee of the district may also have their child swim or dive for the team, as long as they do not live in the Muhlenberg, Schuylkill Valley, Reading, Wilson, Manheim Township, or Owen J. Roberts school districts, as these schools have programs in our league.

Swimmers living in Twin Valley and Wyomissing as well as divers in Exeter are also able to join our GM team.

Please note: Swimmers should be able to swim at least one lap of both freestyle and another stroke before joining the swimming team. Divers should be able to do a forward dive off of the diving board prior to joining the team.

The GMIS Program

When attending Governor Mifflin Intermediate School, students will receive instruction in swimming during 5th and 6th grade. These students will progress at their own pace through the six levels of the American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Curriculum.

In addition to swim lessons, instruction will be given in boating, snorkeling, water polo, and other swim activities.
