Progressive Consequences

The discipline of students with disabilities (student supported through Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or Section 504 Plans is subject to state and federal law in addition to the Code of Conduct. To the extent any conflict exists, state and federal law will prevail. A Manifestation Determination Review (MDR) may be required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) when a student with a disability is suspended or expelled and is required when expulsion or alternative school placements are being considered.

When the needs of a student cannot be met in Governor Mifflin School District, or a student has seriously violated our Code of Conduct, the District will assist students and their parents/guardians in finding an alternative placement, with the goal of the student’s return to the District classroom as soon as is feasible.  

Alternative Education for Disruptive Youth (AEDY) placements, guided by state law, generally last for 45 days if the student successfully attends and completes all assignments with passing grades.

The major emphasis is to prepare students academically and socially for a return to public school. Each student will have individualized goal plans developed in conjunction with group and individual counseling to develop a comprehensive treatment plan. Transition planning will be used to reintegrate youth back into the public school and community setting.

As per Pennsylvania's Act 26 (24 P.S. § 13–1317.2), possessing a weapon on school grounds can lead to serious consequences for students. Even if they don't use it, bringing a weapon to school, a school event, or while traveling to or from school can result in expulsion for at least a year, with some exceptions. Having the weapon in a locker, book bag, or even carrying it for someone else is enough to trigger this rule.
