Shifting Culture, Climate, and Practices

Governor Mifflin is committed to fostering a positive and supportive learning environment for all students. Restorative Practices are proactive approaches that emphasize building relationships and repairing harm. These approaches are a key element to allowing students and staff to work together to understand the impact of behaviors and develop solutions through open communication.  Through facilitated discussions, conferences, or circles, students develop critical social-emotional skills in empathy, communication, and conflict resolution.

Our district prioritizes the social and emotional well-being of our students through Social-Emotional Learning.  By supporting students to develop important skills for life, such as:

• Understanding your strengths and areas for growth

• Managing your emotions effectively

• Building positive relationships with others

• Making responsible decisions

By integrating SEL elements throughout the day, we demonstrate its importance and relevance to student success as these skills are practiced in various ways, helping students become more aware of their own capabilities.  Students who feel confident and know how to seek help are better equipped to reach their full potential.  We support students’ SEL in a way that's research-based, culturally sensitive, and understands the impact of past experiences. This ensures a supportive environment where everyone feels safe and respected.

All Governor Mifflin students have access to school-based mental and behavioral health resources. Staff proactively educate students on the importance of seeking help, whether for themselves or others, when concerns arise. Each year, students, staff, and parents receive an overview of the district’s Student Assistance Program (SAP) and available mental health partnerships, including their purposes and how to access them. Additionally, school staff are trained to recognize warning signs of childhood behavioral health issues and the steps needed to support students experiencing these concerns.

In accordance with Pa Statutes, there may be circumstances in which minors ages 14 and older may consent to outpatient mental health examination and treatment without parental consent or notice. A parent or legal guardian may also consent to outpatient mental health examination and treatment on behalf of a minor without the minor's consent.
